Short answers about static WordPress

Sorted by what you’re deciding: security, speed, hosting, plugins, plans and the free plugin. Each answer links to the page that goes deeper. Still unsure? Ask our support team.

Security: what attackers can reach

How does Staatic protect my site?
Attackers find finished pages and nothing to run. The public site has no PHP, login page or database to send requests to, so the attacks aimed at WordPress have nothing to reach. That matters when the most targeted flaws are attacked a median of 5 hours after they go public. Patchstack, 2026 On Staatic Cloud your WordPress sits on its own address, behind a password prompt, and pauses when idle unless you turn on the always-on add-on. See how Staatic secures WordPress
Do I still need a security plugin or firewall?
Not for the public site: it only serves files, so there’s nothing for a firewall to filter. Your private WordPress still runs code, so keep it updated and use two-step verification. A security plugin there still helps. See how the two work together
What happens if my WordPress breaks or is hacked?
Visitors keep getting the last version you published while you fix it. Only a new publication changes the public site, scheduled ones included, so restore a backup before you publish again. See what keeps running

Speed and how publishing works

How does Staatic work?
Staatic is a WordPress plugin. When you publish, it follows the links of your site from the homepage and saves every finished page with its images and stylesheets. Visitors get those files, and WordPress stays where you edit. See every feature
Will my site be faster?
Pages are built once when you publish, not on every visit, so visitors don’t wait for WordPress. On staatic.com, the homepage takes 47 ms to its first byte from Staatic and 249 ms from our WordPress. Large images, fonts and scripts still take as long to load. See the measurements
Where is my site served from?
On Staatic Cloud, from Amazon CloudFront over HTTPS: 250+ locations (400+ on Enterprise), and visitors get the nearest. With the free plugin, from wherever you publish it. See Staatic Cloud hosting
How do changes go live?
Saving in WordPress doesn’t change the public site; publishing does. Premium can publish just the pages you changed, and publish automatically when you update a post or on a schedule. After a change to menus or your theme, publish the whole site. See the publishing guide
How long does publishing take?
It depends on how many pages and files your site has and how quickly your WordPress builds them. Publishing only your changes keeps most updates short, and the publication summary shows where the time goes. See why a publication can be slow
Will my site look different?
It shouldn’t: Staatic saves the pages your WordPress renders, as they are. If something is missing, it’s usually a file that no page links to. Add it under Additional URLs. See the build settings

Hosting and moving your site

Do I still need WordPress hosting?
Not with Staatic Cloud: it hosts your WordPress, managed for you, and the public site, with daily, weekly and monthly backups. With the free plugin you host WordPress and the static files yourself, on one server or with different providers. See Staatic Cloud hosting
Where is my data stored?
Your WordPress on Staatic Cloud, its backups, your Staatic account, form submissions and search index are all hosted in the EU. Your public pages are served worldwide from 250+ locations. On your own hosting, your WordPress stays there. See where your data lives
How do I move my site to Staatic Cloud?
Import a backup on the site’s WordPress tab in the Staatic dashboard: an UpdraftPlus or single-site Duplicator backup, or a ZIP of your WordPress files and database. Large files can go over SFTP first. Nothing goes public until you publish. See the import guide
Can I try it without touching my live site?
Yes. Import a copy into a Staatic Cloud trial and publish it to the address Staatic gives the site. Your current site and DNS stay as they are until you connect your domain. See getting started
Can I leave?
Yes, there’s no lock-in. Download any backup, with your files and database, and move to any standard WordPress host, or keep the site static on your own hosting with the free plugin. See how to download a backup

Staatic for agencies

Your plugins, forms and search

Will my theme, plugins and page builder work?
Most will. Staatic publishes the pages your WordPress renders, so what a page shows when it loads keeps working. Features that ask WordPress for something while a visitor uses the page need a setting, an origin rule or a live site. Look up yours
Will my contact forms work?
Yes, with Premium. Contact Form 7, Divi, Gravity Forms and WPForms connect on their own; any other HTML form needs two attributes. Submissions are checked for spam, then emailed to your team or sent to your tools. Forms that send through WordPress, such as Ninja Forms, can be rebuilt in one of those plugins. See form handling
Can visitors search my static site?
Yes, with Premium. Staatic Search shows suggestions as visitors type in your theme’s search box, and each suggestion opens its page. A results page you choose can list every match. Each search field can search only some content, such as just your documentation. See search integration
What about WooCommerce, logins and comments?
Logins, carts and member areas need a live server, so they run elsewhere, such as a shop on a subdomain. WordPress comments need one too; a comment service that loads in the browser works. An origin rule can keep an API path live, but not a login. See what works on static
Can some parts of my site stay live?
Yes, on Staatic Cloud. An origin rule sends a path such as /wp-json/* to a live server, your own or your site’s WordPress with the always-on add-on. Every other path stays static. See hybrid static sites
Will switching affect my SEO?
Your pages keep their addresses, and titles, descriptions and structured data publish with each page. Redirects from the common redirect plugins carry over, and on Staatic Cloud your 404 page becomes the static one. Check that canonicals and sitemaps point at your public domain. See the SEO checklist

The free self-hosted plugin

What does the free plugin do?
It publishes your site as static files to Netlify, Amazon S3, SFTP, GitHub, a folder on your server or a ZIP. Forms, search and automatic publishing need Premium. See the self-hosted plans
Is my WordPress private with the free plugin?
The public site is just as static, but keeping WordPress private is up to you, for example with a password prompt, or an IP allowlist that includes your own server so the plugin can reach it. See the preparation guide
Can I add forms and search on my own hosting?
Yes, with a Premium license and your Staatic account connected. Submissions and searches go to Staatic, wherever you publish the site. See the self-hosted plans
What does my server need?
Most WordPress servers run it. Use any permalink structure except Plain, and make sure WordPress can reach its own address; Site Health checks this. See the requirements
